When my parents told me that we were going back to Costa Rica, I was very excited. I
remembered what had happened during the last trip. While thinking about our second trip, I realized I wanted to make more of an impact than just handing out clothes. I also invited Alex Lee, a friend of mine, and he came on the trip with us.
During the first part of the trip, Alex started to see what I had seen in my first trip, and he sensed the need for help. While we knew there was a need, we had not yet come up with a specific plan. It was only when Pastor Padilla later took us to a soccer field, the idea of "One by One Costa Rica" came to all of us.
Alex and I were escorted to the soccer field, and as we were talking on the field with Pastor Padilla, we discussed forming a soccer league, and using the league as a tool to mentor teens caught in the vicious cycles of gangs, homelessness, loneliness, violence or drugs. Pastor Padilla said, "we will help them one by one," and One by One Costa Rica was born!
